"I HAVE A DREAM"

"Out of a mountain of despair, a stone of hope"

"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

A central part of his historic legacy, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his famous "I Have A Dream" speech at the Lincoln Memorial on August 28, 1963. Standing up for justice and change, more than 250,000 people came to the National Mall for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963. Proposed by A. Philip Randolph and organized by Bayard Rustin, the historic demonstration brought together leaders from the "Big 6" civil rights organizations with other labor and religious groups.

After musical performances near the Washington Monument, the crowd marched to the Lincoln Memorial to hear speeches. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave the final speech of the program. Near the end, he departed from his planned remarks and began to talk about his vision for a better future.

His words were broadcast across the nation and became one of the most famous speeches in American history. An inscription on the stairs of the Lincoln Memorial marks the spot of the speech and the nearby Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial was envisioned with a theme from the speech: drawing a stone of hope from the mountain of despair.

The speech advocated for civil and economic rights and an end to racism, marking a pivotal moment in the U.S. Civil Rights Movement.

"Uphold his legacy as a source of inspiration for others to advance the ongoing effort toward a more just and inclusive society, thereby ensuring the continued pursuit of equality"... Heidy
